From Vision to Charter

The story of the St. Augustine (FL) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. began with a vision. Following the celebration of Founders Day on January 5, 2020, Brother Reginald Robinson envisioned a stronger and more visible presence of Kappa Alpha Psi throughout Northeast Florida. What started as conversations among dedicated brothers soon evolved into a collective commitment to establish a chapter that would serve the region while advancing the fundamental objectives of our Fraternity.

Guided by the wisdom and support of fraternity leaders throughout the Southern Province, Southeastern Province, and Grand Chapter, a core group of brothers united around a common purpose: to build an alumni chapter founded on Achievement, Brotherhood, Altruism, and the enduring principles that have distinguished Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. since its founding in 1911.

Laying the Foundation

As momentum grew, brothers gathered in fellowship and strategic planning to chart the path forward. Under the guidance of Tenth Southern Province Polemarch Brother Bertrum K. Orum, the group focused on meeting the requirements necessary to establish a new chapter, including maintaining financial good standing and assembling a strong and active membership base.

Central to these efforts was reclamation. Brothers actively sought to reconnect with inactive members throughout North Florida, inviting them to once again participate in the work and fellowship of Kappa Alpha Psi. These efforts proved successful, bringing thirteen brothers back into active engagement and strengthening the foundation upon which the future chapter would be built.

As the vision matured, the Orange Park–St. Augustine Steering Committee was renamed the St. Augustine Alumni Steering Committee, reflecting both the chapter’s identity and its long-term commitment to the Nation’s Oldest City and the surrounding communities of Northeast Florida.

Establishing the Association

The Steering Committee formally petitioned the Southern Province for recognition, and on May 23, 2023, in Tampa, Florida, the Grand Board approved the recommendation of 12th Southern Province Polemarch Brother Jason M. Jones to establish the St. Augustine Alumni Association.

This milestone represented more than organizational recognition—it affirmed years of dedication, planning, and unwavering belief in the vision first shared among a handful of brothers. With the Association established, Brother Shaun Nelson was elected as its first Polemarch, providing leadership during a pivotal period in the organization’s development.

A Historic Milestone

The efforts of the founding brothers reached their culmination on December 16, 2024, when the 35th Administration of the Grand Board of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. officially approved the chartering of the St. Augustine (FL) Alumni Chapter.

Five days later, on December 21, 2024, the chapter formally received its charter, becoming the newest alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the oldest city in the United States. Brother Shaun Nelson was elected to serve as the inaugural Polemarch, helping usher the chapter into its next era of achievement and service.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, the St. Augustine (FL) Alumni Chapter stands as a testament to vision, perseverance, and brotherhood. With more than thirty dedicated members representing chapters from across the world, the chapter remains committed to serving St. Augustine and the communities of Northeast Florida through leadership, mentorship, community service, and achievement in every field of human endeavor.

As we honor the sacrifices and commitment of our chartering brothers, we proudly carry forward the legacy of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., strengthening our communities, uplifting future generations, and exemplifying the ideals that have guided our Fraternity for more than a century.
